So, I’ve decided conclusively that I won’t be going to the cubing US Nationals 2012 in Las Vegas NV. There are a few reasons why:

  • It’s expensive. Registration is one thing, but also the hotel and travel (even by car) is pretty darn expensive, and I could be using it for other things right now.
  • The dates probably won’t work. Assuming I get into the Youth Symphony again for the 2012-2013 season (auditions in a bit over 2 weeks), then Nationals are happening in the same few days as the Youth Symphony’s annual retreat to this music camp in NM for first sectionals/rehearsals and whatnot, which is mandatory (although you can miss it if you’ve got a good reason. Missing it so you can compete with Rubik’s cubes is not a good reason).
  • My parents don’t really think it’s in my best interests to go at this time.
  • If I did go, it would basically be coming back from about a month-long break because I’m going to music camp for all of July again. Not to say that I won’t be cubing there, but I obviously won’t be focusing on cubing there. So, my performance at Nationals would probably be pretty darn bad.

That’s all. Maybe some other time.

If you want me to lube it i can since i am pretty good at it. Also i could do the 48 point edge mod witch makes it amazing!! but its up to you. Add some lubix and it will be amazing!!

I did it before I saw your post. But, I think I was confident with my Lubix-applying skills that I didn’t need to make you do it. It is quite amazing now. I think DaYan cubes are the only ones I like to use Lubix with.

I lubricated my new GuHong v2 with Lubix and Maru lube, and replaced the purple stickers with orange (the cube came with orange ones). I like it much better now; it feels very stable when using it and it doesn’t really feel out of control. I haven’t gotten particularly good times with it yet because it just makes me want to turn fast instead of slowing down and pacing myself, so I’ll have to be more conscious of that. Other than that, the mechanism doesn’t really look that different from the GuHong I, except for the anchors in the edges to resist pops. Anyway, I would say if your cube is starting to wear out a bit, this seems (based on my limited experiences with it) to be a good cube to try. Maybe it would be less appealing if you’ve been buying all of the recent DaYan cubes, because they all seem pretty much the same to me, at least ever since the ZhanChi came out. I sort of stopped looking in detail at the DaYan hardware after that because they all just seemed so similar.

It sucks.

Well, I guess it hasn’t been lubricated yet. That adds an element of suckiness to it. Also, it has purple instead of orange.

But I should probably finish homework before I play with it more. I think I might try Lubix with it. I’m not a big fan of Lubix (I think it’s okay, and any other lubricant has potential to be as good, but I must agree that it makes DaYan cubes pretty darn good), but I’ve still got, like, half a small tube left from when I got some a long time ago, so I might as well use it, right?

So I’ll post more accurate impressions later.

Got this average of 5 with CFOP today, I’m really pleased with it considering that I’ve lately been stuck at around 16-17 seconds. It’s pretty annoying that I’ve worsened since my month-long break last summer, but oh well. You’d think that I would’ve started to improve after a few weeks back, but nope. But I’m powering through because cubing is still pretty enjoyable to me.

As for methods, I’ve really mainly been working on Triangular Francisco, but learning CSO algs has been a real drag. I’ve also dabbled a bit in Roux, but not much - I want to be fairly proficient in TF before moving on. I hope getting the new GuHong will be good motivation for me to keep practicing.

.

lulz, I go for all of March without making a single post on this blog, and then all of a sudden I make three posts in two days.

I just ordered a DaYan GuHong version II from Amazon. I ordered from Amazon 1) because I was ordering something else from Amazon, and 2) with free shipping, it was pretty much the cheapest I could find for that particular cube. I found it more inexpensive at maybe one other place, but the payment options there were a little more complicated.

I also completely forgot that now the DaYan cubes come with purple stickers until like, 15 seconds ago, so I should probably do something about that, too. I think I have some extra orange stickers just from ordering cubes all the time, but they’re the ugly kind that make the black plastic show through so they are really dim. So if I think that the GuHong is worthy enough, then I might buy Cubesmith stickers for it, but that’ll have to wait for a bit, probably. I really don’t like buying cubing stuff. (well, I like getting cubing stuff, but I don’t like buying it.)

Anyway, I’ll probably post some initial impressions whenever I receive it.

I made a custom logo for one of my cubes! I’ve tried this before but it has never turned out so well, so I’m glad. I think I’ll also be buying some new cubes soon, but I’m not quite sure yet as to what I want. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I don’t think I’ve bought any cubes since December…

I feel so boring and typical doing CFOP all the time. I remember I tried to learn Triangular Francisco on two separate occasions, and then I just stopped after a while…I would feel a lot less like a nobody if I was really fast at CFOP (we’re talking sub-10 fast), but after a year with little to no improvement with 3x3x3, I think it’s time to turn over a new page.

I just want to learn something new. I want to be unique.

I don’t know. Triangular Francisco seems like a good place to start. It’s not known to be particularly fast, but at least I can be one of the few who can say that I can use it and get relatively decent results.

Other methods that sound fun? Maybe ZZ or even ZB. MGLS would be a cool trick to know (I’ll know it if I learn all the algs for TF). But you know how much I hate learning algorithms.

It would be really cool if I could create my own method…but I would have to know a lot more about theory if I were to do that, and if I did, it would probably just be a substep of another method. Let’s consider that my long-term goal.

Okay. No more CFOP. Let’s do it.
